Safari Packing & Connectivity Checklist (2026)

Connectivity gear is easy to forget when you're focused on the bigger safari packing list. Here's the connectivity-specific checklist to run through before you leave.

Before you leave home

Install your Kenya eSIM's QR code, without activating the data line yet, so it's ready the moment you land. Download offline maps for your full itinerary, not just your first stop. Save your accommodation and transfer confirmations somewhere accessible offline — a screenshot works. Check your phone's IMEI/EID and confirm eSIM compatibility if you haven't already.

Power and charging

A power bank is close to essential for safari days — long game drives away from charging points combined with maps, photos, and messaging drain batteries fast. A universal travel adapter is worth packing even if you think you know Kenya's plug type, since accommodation varies. A car charger or extra battery pack matters more the more remote your itinerary gets.

For remote parks specifically

If your itinerary includes genuinely low-coverage parks — Samburu, Meru, Aberdare's interior — treat connectivity as unavailable for stretches rather than intermittent, and brief people at home accordingly before you go quiet. Some travelers heading to the most remote areas carry a satellite messenger as backup; it's not necessary for mainstream parks like Maasai Mara or Amboseli, which have workable lodge-area Safaricom coverage.

Day-of checklist

Enable data roaming on your Kenya eSIM line once you land, not before, if your plan's validity starts on first connection. Confirm your eSIM shows as the active data line, not your home SIM. Brief your travel companions and family on your general connectivity plan for the trip — when to expect responses, and which stretches will be quiet.

What you probably don't need

A physical local SIM in addition to an eSIM is redundant unless you're deliberately going the "eSIM for arrival, physical SIM for the rest of a long trip" route. Multiple regional or global eSIMs stacked on top of each other is also unnecessary for a Kenya-only or Kenya-plus-one-neighbor trip — one well-chosen plan covers it.
